Scarnafigi

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,094 · Postal code: 12030

The name first appears in 989, and in the same year so does the Benedictine convent, which stayed in the village until 1571: nothing of it is left, and it probably stood near the castle. Where the place name comes from is unknown; the -igi ending points to Lombard or late Roman roots.

In the twelfth century the settlement lay where the sanctuary of the Cristo now stands, in a borgo called Villa Quadraciana; but that quarter never grew, and the village formed instead around the castle. Between 1928 and 1947 Scarnafigi did not exist on its own: it was joined to Ruffia in the commune of Scarnafigi-Ruffia.
