Feast of the Madonna della Noce and Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 15 September
On 15 September Villanova Solaro celebrates the Madonna della Noce, patron of the main village, and Saint John the Baptist, patron of the hamlet of Vernetto.
Villanova Solaro, in the province of Cuneo, takes its name from the Solaro, a Guelph family of Asti. In 1327 Filippo d'Acaja ordered it rebuilt, walled it and brought people back to it; it separated from Moretta in 1423. Before Italian unification the name ended in a: Villanova Solara.
The Solaro castle is still standing: a block of bare brick with a round corner tower and bands of small brick arches along the walls. The town's arms are red, with the silver cross of Saint Andrew and four gold five-pointed stars; the purple chief was in all likelihood the fascist chief, scraped away after the fall of the regime and left blank.
