Cissone sits at the western end of the ridge climbing towards Serravalle Langhe, in the Alta Langa, above a wooded valley cut by the Riavolo; beyond the village there are only the hamlets of Albera, Baudrà, Fenogli and Neri. The name goes back to a Roman personal name, Civicio or Civicius, and a funerary stele found in the cemetery, now kept in the town hall, seems to confirm that early origin. Between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries it appears as Cluxonus, Cloxonus, Ceuxonus, Cuxonus and Zuxonus.
In 1928 a royal decree abolished the municipality, merging Cerretto Langhe, Cissone and Serravalle delle Langhe into one body named Serravalle Langhe; a law of 30 May 1950 gave Cissone its autonomy back. Its arms are silver with a red charge the Piedmontese civic armorial calls an estaje — a shortened chevron heralds do not define alike — and two gold letters C, while the municipal website draws it as a bend. The parish church is dedicated to Saint Lucy.
