Venasca

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,472 · Postal code: 12020

Venasca sits at the mouth of the Valle Varaita, where the side valleys of Isasca and Rossana come in: two low saddles lead to Saluzzo and the Valle Maira. A dialect proverb warns that to see hell you should try Venasca in winter, when the north wind comes down the valley.

The crossroads brought a market: from the fifteenth century a weekly market served the lower valley, and in the early sixteenth Venasca worked the iron mined higher up. On a spur above the plain stands the chapel of the Nativity at Peralba, documented as early as 1143: the name probably comes from albus, white, after the colour of the local stone or building.
