Isasca

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 78 · Postal code: 12020

Isasca is the smallest municipality in the Valle Varaita by area: it sits at the valley mouth, on the left bank of the stream, with the Valle Bronda next door and a crossroads on the road to Saluzzo. The centre is small; the rest are hamlets along the mountainsides, most now empty. The -asca ending suggests Ligurian origins, as in nearby Venasca, Brossasco and Piasco.

The first trace of the village is a will of 1247: Guglielmo, then lord of Venasca, granted the abbey of Staffarda the right to take wood on Isasca land. From the early fifteenth century Isasca appears free of any feudal tie, its first statutes dating from 1563; Carlo Emanuele I later gave it in fief to Ludovico Della Chiesa, lord of Costigliole, for two thousand three hundred ducatoni. In 1928 it was merged into Venasca, and split off again at the end of the Second World War.
