Grosso

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,040 · Postal code: 10070

The first document naming the parish of Grosso dates from 1209. On the left bank of the Stura di Lanzo, marshland later turned fertile, four fortified enclosures went up: Nole, Villanova, Liràmo and Grosso. When Liràmo's burned down in 1326 its lands passed to Grosso, and ever since the church has been dedicated to Saints Lawrence and Stephen, Stephen being Liràmo's patron.

Outside the village stands San Ferreolo, a Benedictine church at least a hundred years older than the parish: river cobbles and brick arches, and inside frescoes that resurfaced in the nineteen-seventies, traced to the Reichenau school. A parish priest, don Pietro Mellica, is said to have taught the villagers to make chairs and tables.
