Corio

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,330 · Postal code: 10070

At Corio the surnames come in pairs: Ruo Roch, Rubat Borel, Baima Beuc, Corgiat Mecio, Brach Papa, and dozens more. The second part usually names the hamlet the family came from — the Rubat of ca' 'd Borel, those of ca' d'Ors — and there were even triple ones, very rare, like Ruo Redda Lossat.

For some eighty years, across the land of Corio and neighbouring Balangero, an asbestos quarry was worked: it was reckoned the largest open-cast one in Europe. The main monument of the town is the church of San Genesio, with Santa Croce beside it, which stood there before.
