Mathi

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,985 · Postal code: 10075

Opinions on the name differ. Canon Felice Assalto looked at where the village sits in relation to the valleys: it lies eastward, that is towards the morning, hence Matti. Another idea takes it from the Greek mathetés, scholar or disciple, perhaps because of the Benedictines' teaching: from the Lombard Matingo came Mateis, then Maty and Mati, and finally Mathi, whose h recalls the Greek theta, written th in Latin.

From 1939 to 1959 the comune was spelled Mati, without the h, then took its old name back. There has been a paper mill here for nearly two centuries: on the founder's death his widow sold it to don Giovanni Bosco for a hundred thousand lire, and he built it up again.
