Mercenasco

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,267 · Postal code: 10010

The name may come from the Celtic mark zen mag, “lower border village”, or from a Latin Marcinius; the first document to name it cites one Guillelmus Bogius de Martianasco. A Roman stele of the first century turned up before the parish church. The Guelph and Ghibelline wars destroyed the castle in the fourteenth century; in 1349 the marquis of Monferrato had it rebuilt.

Little of that fortress is left: in the nineteenth century the Compans de Brichanteau turned it into a manor with decorated fronts inside a park, still private. Villate, its hamlet, first appears in 1292; tradition has it founded by Aostans devoted to Sant'Orso and San Grato, the saint of its church.
