Barbania

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,623 · Postal code: 10070

The name is Celtic and joins two settlements: bar, the fortified village on the rise where the old centre stands, and bannos, huts beyond the brook. It appears in 1019, when Emerico Dro, a Burgundian lord of the Malone, gave it to the monastery he had founded at Busano.

In 1305 Philip I of Savoy-Achaea took Barbania, and the community accepted him for franchises: no local could be jailed outside it, and had to be tried at home. Later the village bought the lordship over itself, escaping infeudation. Where the oldest houses stood stands the church of Rua Veder, called most ancient in the fourteenth century, now dedicated to the Assumption painted on its gable.
