Saint Roch, patron of the land of the Chapel of the Holy Trinity
📅 Every year, on 16 August
Castagnole Piemonte celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August, in the church dedicated to him.
The name comes from the chestnut and the coat of arms confirms it, with a chestnut tree in fruit. But the motto beneath the shield sets things straight: Non inter ardua montium, not among the harshness of the mountains. Here it is all flat land, sown with wheat and maize and crossed by irrigation channels.
The first document naming Castagnole is from 1037, when the territory lay in the county of Turin; in the soil, meanwhile, a hoard of working axes from the early bronze age was found. The Piemonte at the end of the name came much later, in 1864, by decree of Vittorio Emanuele II, to keep it apart from the Castagnole of the Langhe and the Monferrato.
