The Holy Bodies, patrons of the town of Scalenghe
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of September
Scalenghe celebrates the Corpi Santi (Holy Bodies) on the first Sunday of September.
The name first appears as Scelenga, in the act by which in 1037 Landolfo, bishop of Turin, founded the abbey of Cavour, and over the next three centuries it changes shape almost every time someone writes it: Schelenga, Scalingiis in 1148, Scalengis, Scalenghis, Skalengiarum, down to Escalengiis in 1377. The form is Germanic and points to a Lombard settlement.
During the French occupation of Pinerolo, Scalenghe was border country, and some treaties between Savoy and France were signed here. The town has no river of its own, but it sits among the Lemina, Pellice, Chisone and Chisola, and the fields live on that water. The railway that linked Airasca to Saluzzo, now closed, has become a cycle path.
