Saint Firmin of Amiens, patron of the land of the Lurduit spring
📅 Every year, on the fourth Sunday of September
Cercenasco celebrates Saint Firmin of Amiens on the fourth Sunday of September, in the chapel dedicated to him.
The old name, Circinascum, is an adjective in -asco, a Ligurian suffix, built on circinus, a circle: it probably meant an enclosure. In 1225 the fief went to the lords of Bernezzo, and their heirs built the castle and the chapel of Sant'Anna, which keeps some good frescoes.
In October 1693, after the battle of Marsaglia, French troops under General Catinat burned Cercenasco; the castle walls did not come down in the fire, so they were blown up with mines, as Catinat told Louis XIV. North of the village, in the Stonea wetland, dozens of springs fed the tanks where hemp was retted; some are still there.
