Cintano

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 261 · Postal code: 10080

Cintano lies in the middle of the Valle Sacra, in the Canavese, on a south-facing slope crossed end to end by the Piova, which rises on the southern flanks of the Punta di Verzel. The territory runs from south to north and takes in the hamlet of the Santuario di Piova and some upland settlements near Castelnuovo Nigra; the village was founded around 1300.

In 1927 the municipality left the province of Turin for that of Aosta, a year later it was absorbed into Castelnuovo Nigra, in 1945 it returned to Turin and only in 1947 regained its independence. In 2020 the council revoked the honorary citizenship given to Benito Mussolini and conferred it on Liliana Segre and Sami Modiano, survivors of the deportation, unveiling a monument to the town's honorary citizenships. A monument and a statue are dedicated to the basilisk, the winged serpent with a rooster's head and feet whose gaze kills.
