Feast of Saint Sebastian
📅 Every year, on 20 January
On 20 January Castelnuovo Nigra celebrates its patron Saint Sebastian, to whom the town's church is dedicated; the valley was a place of ancient popular and religious performances at Christmas.
Castelnuovo Nigra has no single centre: it grew from two villages, Villa Castelnuovo and the larger Sale Castelnuovo, which holds the town hall and named its people salesi. At 828 metres, it lies in the valley once called di Castelnuovo, now Valle Sacra; the surname comes from Costantino Nigra, Risorgimento poet and diplomat born here.
At Villa Castelnuovo the castle is a ruin, raised where the remains of an older fortification or watchtower stood: hence the auspicious name, Castelnuovo. In 1980 falling plaster uncovered the Ciclo dei Prodi, frescoes of the second quarter of the fifteenth century, detached and taken to Cuorgnè. The parish church of San Sebastiano carries its dedication on the lintel.
