Colleretto Castelnuovo lies in the Valle Sacra, above Castellamonte. Its castle was built by the counts of San Martino, who claimed descent from Arduin of Ivrea; damaged in the Tuchini revolt, it was pulled down by French troops in 1500. Only the tower survives from the Middle Ages, and it is the one on the village shield: silver on blue, two storeys, door and windows open.
The hill above the village was once called Crosilietto: a small sanctuary went up there in 1707, after miracles written down at the time, and in 1796 a larger one was built beside it, for Mary's visitation to Saint Elizabeth. The hill has kept that name, and so has the peak.
