Cuorgnè

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 10,084 · Postal code: 10082

Cuorgnè stands at the mouth of the Orco valley, at 414 metres, in the morainic amphitheatre between the granite ridge of Belmonte, Monte Soglio and the Quinzeina: islands of red granite break through the alluvial ground below the hills of Costosa and Santa Lucia.

Not far away stood Canava, from the Celtic Canaba, the settlement that gave the Canavese its name: it vanished around 1030, swept away by a flood of the Orco, and in its place grew Cuorgnè, Castellamonte and Valperga. The town began in a strategic spot and changed trade three times: first a winter base for shepherds, then a military post, finally a place of exchange between the produce of the plain and that of the alpine valleys.
