Levone

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 439 · Postal code: 10070

Levone lies in the Canavese, north of Turin; Alvon in Piedmontese. At Montiglio, by the chapel of San Pietro Apostolo, stone slabs and inscriptions of the third and fourth century point to a late-imperial exilium, a place of banishment. The summer of 1474 left a heavier file: four women tried for witchcraft, two sentenced to be burned alive outside the village, the papers kept in Turin's State Archives.

The gate-tower of the old ricetto still stands in the village centre: Roman numerals on the dial, plaster fallen away to show river cobbles and brick, the street passing under the arch. The chapel of Sant'Antonio has the Shroud painted on its front.
