Rocca Canavese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,754 · Postal code: 10070

Rocca Canavese sits in a hollow of the upper Malone valley, where the stream once marked the border between the marches of Ivrea and Susa: the village was one of Ivrea's bulwarks, and of its castle only the outer walls are left. The comune takes in 82 hamlets, scattered over the hills and along the roads to Levone, Barbania and Corio.

Where the parish church now stands there was a nunnery, founded in 1109 by Almeo di Barbania; the present church was begun around 1660 with the castle's stone. The chapel of Santa Croce, once the castle's oratory, has been deconsecrated and serves the comune for cultural events.
