Two explanations are given for the name, and both say something: the Latin flere, to weep, for the violent floods of the Orco, or Filictum, the place full of ferns. The village is first heard of in 827, and through a person: Ghisiberto of Feletto, a lawyer, defending the monks of Novalesa.
Beside the parish church stands the Torrione, perhaps what is left of the medieval castle. It has changed trade more than once: first a bell tower, which it still is, then the town hall, and today it holds the local tourist association and a bank. The village passed to Savoy only in 1741, after seven centuries of independence.
