Ozegna

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,235 · Postal code: 10080

Ozegna has not always stood here: the first village lay about a kilometre to the south-east, around the chapel of San Besso, where burials, coins, roof tiles and spindle whorls have surfaced. Besso was a Roman Christian soldier martyred in Val Soana; his relics stayed there until the eleventh century, when king Arduin moved them to Ivrea cathedral.

Today's village grew out of the ricetto, the enclosure where crops and cattle were kept safe: between the Orco floods and the brigand bands people moved in, and by the fifteenth century the storerooms were houses. In 1432 the villagers won the protection of the Biandrate counts, who in return wanted the stronghouse turned into a fort.
