Usseaux

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 185 · Postal code: 10060

Usseaux stands in the upper Val Chisone, in the Cottian Alps, and carries its name written on its arms: two silver swords crossed, points upward, and above them the word Uxellum in gold capitals. The name is traced to the Celtic root uxellos, "high", which is what the place is: the main village sits halfway up the slope above the valley road, and the hamlets share the two sides. Rock carvings have been found at Rocca del Colle.

Besides the main village the comune has four hamlets, each with two names, the local one and the Italianised one: Balboutet and Finale, Fraisse and Frassineto, Laux and Lauso, Pourrieres and Purrieri. The patouà, alpine Occitan, is still spoken in them. At Usseaux the communal oven, washhouse and mill of the eighteenth century still stand; at Pourrieres a dam on the Chisone has made a lake bearing the hamlet's name since 1950.
