Agliè

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,644 · Postal code: 10011

The name, according to the philologist Gian Domenico Serra, would come from Alliacus, a Roman settler. Another hypothesis takes it from Ala Dei, wing of God, because the plan of the original castle draws a wing spread towards the east. The town owes some of its fame to the poet Guido Gozzano.

Filippo San Martino di Agliè was minister, personal counsellor and favourite of Cristina di Borbone-Francia, the Madama Reale: in 1640, by order of cardinal Richelieu, he was thrown in prison, and came out two years later. In the castle, between 1767 and 1775, the gallery that links it to the parish church was built.
