Saint George, patron of the land of the Castle and the church of Ruspaglia
📅 Every year, on 23 April
San Giorgio Canavese celebrates Saint George on 23 April, in the castle dedicated to him.
The name of the hamlet Cortereggio keeps the memory of a curtis regia, the Carolingian administrative unit that held an important stretch along the Orco here: probably the first settlement in the area. The town belonged for centuries to the counts of Biandrate, through quarrels and truces, until in 1518 the people rose and went to sack the castle.
In the nineteenth century San Giorgio earned the nickname "the Athens of the Canavese", for the number of men of wit and learning who had done the town credit. In the seventeenth century its arms showed Saint George on horseback felling the dragon, led by the figure of a maiden, with the motto Insidiis obstat virtus, "valour stands against snares".
