Feast of San Grato
📅 Every year, on the last Sunday of August
On the last Sunday of August San Colombano Belmonte, a municipality of 376 inhabitants in the province of Turin, celebrates its patron San Grato.
Old records call the village Can-Colombano and Campo Colombano; Belmonte came after unification, to tell it from its namesakes. A hamlet of Cuorgnè, it seems to have become a comune towards the mid fifteenth century, and shook off the counts of Valperga in the early seventeen hundreds. In 1869 it absorbed Sale Canischio, then spent twenty years back under Cuorgnè.
At Buasca, late in the fifteen hundreds, a wayside pillar held an image of the Madonna, and the ferns around it grew back thicker however often they were pulled up, green even under snow. For that wonder the villagers built the chapel, named Madonna della Filassola from files, dialect for fern.
