San Martino Canavese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 851 · Postal code: 10010

On the hill of the remains of the so-called castle of King Arduin a landslip laid bare a lens of ancient soil, dark against the pale ground: it held incised potsherds, green stone axe fragments, a red flint point and a clay statuette, a female figure referred to the mother-goddess cult. The medieval castle's walls cut into that Neolithic palaeosol.

The bell tower is the old gate tower into the ricetto; the parish church carries the names of San Martino and Santa Costanza, the hamlet Silva that of San Grato. At Pranzalito the Sapino family hid two Turin Jewish couples until the Liberation; in 1989 Yad Vashem declared Giuseppe Sapino Righteous Among the Nations.
