Torre Canavese lies on the flank of a morainic hill above the Castellamonte plain. Its name comes from a Roman-age tower at the fork of the pilgrim road and the road into the Valchiusella. An eleventh-century document calls it Turre Canepitii, already held by the counts of San Martino; in the castle above the village Guidone, second son of Arduino, lived until 1018, when he was elected Marquis of Ivrea.
The ricetto tower survives, with the gate into the enclosure where the community kept its goods safe. It was called Torre di Bairo: in 1929 Bairo absorbed it, after the war it became autonomous again as Torre Bairo, and in 1961 took its present name.
