The town was called Pulchra Rada, beautiful shore: that is how it is named in the document of 4 May 991, in which Anselm of Monferrato promises to put back on its feet the Benedictine abbey the Saracens had destroyed. The present name came in 1420, from the monk saint Maurus, a disciple of Benedict and protector of the gouty and the lame.
The abbey of Pulcherada is still there, reduced to a parish church after the suppression of 1803. For centuries the Po was both road and frontier: you crossed by boat, and the bridge came only on 8 September 1912. Then, with Turin's factories, the population tripled in sixty years: today it is 18,925, with the Superga hill looking down.
