Pino Torinese

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 8,481 · Postal code: 10025

Pino Torinese sits on a hill between 500 and 630 metres, halfway between Turin and Chieri. Its name is as recent as its independence: the village was first called Pinariano and then Pinallo, and only towards the middle of the fifteenth century did Pino appear; administrative autonomy from Chieri came on 12 January 1694, granted by Victor Amadeus II.

They call it the village of the stars, and the reason stands on the hill of the Torre Rotonda: where between 1170 and 1183 the people of Chieri raised a fortified structure, of which few ruins remain, the astronomical observatory that had stood on the roof of Palazzo Madama was moved between 1907 and 1912.
