Santena

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 10,738 · Postal code: 10026

Santena lies on the plain south-east of Turin, not far from the right bank of the Po. The name comes from the old rio Santina, today the Banna torrent, which cuts the town in two, and in turn from the pre-Roman tribe of the Santones. The first document naming it dates from 1029, when the village was given to the canons of San Salvatore in Turin.

For centuries it was disputed with Chieri, under which it finally passed in 1311, becoming an independent comune only in 1878. In the seventeenth century the Benso, bankers from Chieri who had bought the march of Cavour, set their residences here: from that family came Camillo Benso, buried here by his own wish. The town is also known for its asparagus.
