Saint Roch in the fief of the Vagnone
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Trofarello celebrates Saint Roch in the chapel dedicated to him; the town was a fief of the Vagnone family, whose medieval castle tower still stands.
Trofarello lies south of Turin, on the route that linked Genoa with France: the county mattered precisely as a defended stopping and supply point along that road. The oldest document naming it dates from 1228, when the county of Celle was granted to the Vagnone, lords of Revigliasco and Trofarello.
The town's modern history runs on rails. In 1848 the first railway in Piedmont reached it: the Turin-Trofarello line was the opening stretch of the Turin-Genoa, and for a few months Trofarello was the terminus of the only train in the Kingdom of Sardinia. The line reached Genoa in 1853; since 1878 the branch for Chieri has also started here, still used to travel into the city.
