The meaning of the name is uncertain: it seems to come from Vicus Guidonis. The first record is of 1029 and shows Vigone under the marquis Manfredi of Susa; later the town passed to Savoy. It lies in flat alluvial country, among the Pellice, Chisone and Lemina streams, and is made of an old centre and many hamlets and lone farms.
The plague of 1630 killed fifteen hundred people here, and that is why the townspeople chose Saint Nicholas of Tolentino as their protector: devotion to him had already spread after an Augustinian convent was built in the fifteenth century.
