Villafranca Piemonte

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,825 · Postal code: 10068

From 1934 to 1950 the town was called Villafranca Sabauda; then it took its old name back. In 1515 the French under Jacques de La Palice beat the papal troops here and captured their commander, Prospero Colonna, along with his trusted Pietro Margano.

It lies in flat alluvial country, watered by the Pellice, the Chisone and the Po, and the position suits farming: wheat and fodder were once the main crops, today it is almost only maize, grown intensively. Besides the centre there are seven hamlets, smaller clusters and a great many isolated houses.
