Volvera

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 8,690 · Postal code: 10040

Volvera was once called Laurera, probably for the laurels that grew around the walls of its castle. The first records are from the eleventh century: in 1029 the bishop of Asti gave half the village to the monastery of San Giusto in Susa, which obtained the other half in 1037. Then came the counts of Piossasco, feudal lords here until the end of the eighteenth century.

The date nobody here forgets is 4 October 1693, the battle of Marsaglia: the village was burned and sacked, and the fields lay uncultivable for years. The Croce Barone, raised on the old Pinerolo road in 1913, is what remembers it.
