The name is disputed. Flechia in 1871 and Olivieri in 1965 derive it from the gentile name Arrius with the Ligurian suffix -asco. A second version, less reliable, starts from ajra, the place where the corn was threshed. A third, resting on genealogical studies, has it that in 1326 count Bertolino Piossasco Di Rossi gave the borgo and the castle the name of a family, the Cavigliasso y Airasca, which had given history a number of admirals.

The place was a fief of the Piossaschi Derossi from the thirteenth century to the end of the eighteenth, and grew around a castle of which little now remains. At the end of the seventeenth century Catinat's French troops half destroyed it.
