Saluggia

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 4,170 · Postal code: 13040

Three ideas about the name: the Salluvii people, said to be the first inhabitants; the willows that grew here in abundance; or the huge furrow cut by the Dora Baltea. The first certain notice is a document of Otto II of 999, describing the court of Saluggia.

Old maps in the town archive show a fortification with six towers, and we know what became of them: three are still marked, one was pulled down to build a warehouse for the fief, and two more to raise the palace of the Mazzetti-Pastoris counts, which is now the town hall. From 1631 the place passed to Savoy, lost all military weight, and the fortifications began to come down.
