Lamporo

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 546 · Postal code: 13046

Lamporo lies on the plain between Crescentino and Livorno Ferraris, shaped by water: two long rows of houses line the banks of the Lamporo, a canal that feeds the Marcova and through it the Sesia. The village takes its name from an old stream, the Ampurius, which in Roman times ran towards the Sesia, a name perhaps from the Celtic root ambe-, river.

Where the road crosses the canal, piazza Monateri holds the parish church of San Bernardo di Mentone: the parish dates from the sixteenth century, the church is baroque, with a painting attributed to Moncalvo or his school. Some 500 metres west, the Madonna di Loreto chapel straddles the canal.
