Binetto

Province: Bari · Region: Puglia · Population: 2,162 · Postal code: 70020

The name is Latin and means vineyard: Vinetum. The village began as a farm settlement in the early Middle Ages, was ravaged by the Saracens, and in the eleventh century had as its lord a certain Umfredo, perhaps a kinsman of Tancred of Hauteville, who fortified it. The church of the Assunta, built between 1198 and 1203, is pure Apulian Romanesque: a gabled front, three round-arched doorways, a plain oculus. The patron is the Madonna of Constantinople, and the devotion dates from 1784, when she was credited with saving the harvest from a frost that had burnt the fields of the surrounding villages.

For a small place, Binetto has a dense political history: in 1799, with the Neapolitan revolution, the tree of liberty was raised here, and in 1820 a Carbonari lodge had its seat in the village. In 1927 the municipality was abolished and joined to Grumo Appula; independence came back only in 1946, obtained by a local lawyer, Vito D'Attolico. There was also a plan to merge Binetto, Grumo and Toritto into a single new municipality, but it was rejected. One more oddity remains on the map: the Matine district is an exclave of the municipality, out in the countryside of Bitonto.
