The patron of Bagnolo del Salento is Saint George: the religious feast falls on 23 April, while the civil celebration is held on the first Sunday of August. The cult was certainly introduced by the Basilian monks between the 10th and 12th centuries.
While tradition wants the saint depicted on horseback fighting the dragon, at Bagnolo he is portrayed on foot, in armour, helmet and lance, in the act of piercing the monster at his feet; on the first Sunday of November the Fiera di Mater Domini is held.
