The patron saint of Grottaglie is Saint Cyrus, celebrated on 31 January.
The town stands on land marked by ravines, on whose sides numerous caves have been carved: the town centre itself is largely carved into tufa, as shown by the Cave di Fantiano, now home to an open-air theatre. The town is dominated by the Castello Episcopio, built at the end of the 14th century at the will of the archbishop of Taranto Giacomo d'Atri, who also had the walls and the mother church built. Grottaglie has been known for centuries for its ceramic production, celebrated every year between August and September at the ceramics exhibition held in the castle's halls.
