Tergu

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 614 · Postal code: 07030

Tergu is a very young municipality: it was born on 10 February 1980, after a popular consultation, putting together pieces of territory that belonged to Castelsardo, Osilo and Nulvi. Before that it did not exist as an administrative body; the village, though, had been there for centuries. The land has been settled since the Nuragic age, and in the Middle Ages it lay in the curatoria of Montes, within the judicate of Torres.

The church of Nostra Signora is nine hundred years old: it was wanted at the end of the eleventh century by judge Mariano I of Torres, and it is Romanesque. The municipality that keeps it is thus nine centuries younger than the church. In Sassarese the village's name sounds Zelgu, and that form is co-official.
