Licata was the last city founded by the Greeks of Sicily — Phintias, 282 BC — and the first liberated in 1943: the Americans landed here in Operation Husky, opening the Italian campaign. Between those two extremes, a surprising centre of Art Nouveau palaces by Ernesto Basile, Baroque churches and the Sant'Angelo castle above the port.
The mouth of the Salso, the island's longest river, and the beaches of Mollarella and Marianello frame a true sea town, with its fish market and a seafood cooking that won over the guides. Agrigento and its temples half an hour away.
