The patron of Siculiana is the Most Holy Crucifix, and its feast is «lu tri di maju»: three days of celebration around 3 May, the town's most important occasion.
A legend, with many variants, tells of the origin of the Black Christ. In the commonest version the statue had been commissioned by the people of Burgio from an artist of the Ragusa area, and the carters were taking it to Burgio in a crate. Reaching the gates of Siculiana they stopped to eat; a blind man — or a lame one, depending on who tells it — sat on the crate and was healed at once. He cried miracle, the carters had to show what was inside, and the people of Siculiana would not let it be carried away: the Crucifix ended up in the church of the Chiaramonte castle. Today it stands in the mother church, the sanctuary of the Most Holy Crucifix.
