Approaching Mascali today, travelers immediately notice its distinct 1930s grid, a direct consequence of a natural disaster. In 1928, lava from Mount Etna completely obliterated the original settlement. The town was rebuilt from scratch shortly after, shifting its core along the SS114 state highway.
Positioned about 30 kilometers northeast of Catania, between Giarre and Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, the modern municipality is home to 13,792 residents. While it lacks the medieval alleys of neighboring settlements, its straightforward layout provides an easy transit point for those driving along the eastern Sicilian coast.
