During the Fascist era, Giarre briefly vanished from the map as an independent entity, merged with its coastal neighbor Riposto to form the short-lived municipality of Ionia. Though the political union was eventually dissolved, the physical connection remains unbroken. Today, the streets flow seamlessly from the lower slopes of Mount Etna straight down to the Ionian Sea.
With around 28,100 residents, the town serves as the primary commercial hub for the surrounding Ionian-Etnean district. Located 30 kilometers north of Catania and acting as a midpoint on the road to Taormina, it provides a highly practical base for navigating Sicily's busy eastern coastline.
