Fiumefreddo di Sicilia owes its identity to the icy runoff from Mount Etna. Translating literally to cold river, the town officially added its regional suffix to avoid administrative confusion with Fiumefreddo Bruzio in Calabria. Fed by volcanic snowmelt, this waterway skirts the edge of the Ionian coastal municipality.
Home to 9,690 residents, the settlement functions as a highly practical springboard for exploring the volcano. Drivers planning a mountain ascent will find it a straightforward starting point, as the SS120 highway originates right here and provides a direct route up to the elevation of Randazzo.
