Riposto

Province: Catania · Region: Sicily · Population: 14,181 · Postal code: 95018

The name means larder: in Sicilian ripostu is the storeroom, the cellar, and for centuries this place was exactly that — the warehouse of the county of Mascali, where the wine of Etna ended up before sailing for Europe. By the late nineteenth century the trade was such that Sweden, Norway, Brazil and Great Britain kept consuls here, and a weekly came out called La Sicilia Vinicola.

The town broke away from Giarre in 1841, after decades of quarrels, and in 1939 was joined to it again under the name Ionia: it took the war and 1945 to become two separate comuni once more. In 1820 Italy's second nautical school after Camogli was set up here, and it is still going. Franco Battiato was born here; there are 14,181 residents.
