Piedimonte Etneo

Province: Catania · Region: Sicily · Population: 4,079 · Postal code: 95017

The comune is a vertical section of Etna: it starts at 130 metres and reaches 2,874, at the top of the volcano. Each band has its own crop. Low down the citrus groves, on terraces; then the vines, which here give Etna rosso DOC from Nerello mascalese; higher up apples, pears, peaches and cherries.

Towards a thousand metres the hazel and chestnut woods begin, at 1,700 the Corsican pine and the Etna birch appear, and on the bare lava only the pioneer plants grow: soapwort, milkvetch, broom. Of the 2,646 hectares of the territory, 794 lie inside the Etna Park. There are 4,079 residents.
