The patron saint of Viagrande is Saint Maurus Abbot, a 6th-century Christian saint of the Benedictine order, celebrated on 15 January: the feast in his honour is the town's most important religious celebration and is considered one of the most beautiful and best-attended in all of eastern Sicily, drawing not only Viagrande's own people but also residents of neighbouring towns and numerous visitors from outside the province and from other regions. It is held every year from 1 to 22 January and repeats on the first Sunday of September.
During the procession the saint's statue litter crosses the whole town, passing first through the church of San Biagio, in the Viscalori district, and does not return to church before 10 pm. Viagrande also preserves numerous other historic churches, including those of Mary Most Holy Annunciate, San Vito, Saint Catherine Virgin and Martyr, Sant'Antonio di Padova and the Most Holy Saviour.
