The patron of Piazza Armerina and of its diocese is Maria Santissima delle Vittorie, celebrated on 15 August and on 3 May. The ancient painting that portrays her is kept in the cathedral.
Bound to that devotion is the Palio dei Normanni, the historical re-enactment that, together with the mosaics of the Villa del Casale, gives the town its nickname: the city of the Mosaics and of the Palio dei Normanni.
